Asymptotic representation of low-frequency dynamic tides in close binaries

چکیده
An asymptotic representation of low-frequency dynamic tides in close binaries is developed. The dynamic tides are treated as low-frequency, linear, isentropic, forced oscillations of a non-rotating spherically symmetric star. The asymptotic representation is developed to the second order in the forcing frequency. For the sake of simplification, the star is assumed to be everywhere in radiative equilibrium. As asymptotic approximation of order zero, the divergencefree static tide of which the radial component is solution of Clairaut’s equation, is adopted. In the asymptotic approximation of order two, the oscillatory properties of the star play a role. The asymptotic solutions are constructed by means of a twovariable expansion procedure. The regions near the star’s centre and surface are treated as boundary layers. The Eulerian perturbation of the gravitational potential caused by the star’s tidal distortion is incorporated in the asymptotic treatment. An expression for that perturbation at the star’s surface is derived to the second-order approximation. The expression is determined by the non-oscillatory parts of the asymptotic solutions valid near the star’s surface.

The asymptotic representation of dynamic tides in close binaries revisited
The asymptotic representation of low-frequency, linear, isentropic dynamic tides in components of close binaries derived by Smeyers (1997) is reconsidered. The constructions of the second-order boundary-layer solutions for the divergence and the radial component of the tidal displacement are made more transparent. Moreover, the determination of the constants involved in the second-order boundar...
متن کاملResonant dynamic tides and apsidal motion in close binaries
The resonance of a dynamic tide with a free oscillation mode in a component of a close binary system of stars is treated by means of a two-time variable expansion procedure. The treatment is developed with respect to a frame of reference corotating with the star. Both the free oscillation mode and the dynamic tide are considered as linear, isentropic perturbations of a spherically symmetric sta...
متن کاملDynamic Tides in Close Binaries
The basic theory of dynamic tides in close binaries is reviewed. Particular attention is paid to resonances between dynamic tides and free oscillation modes and to the role of the apsidal-motion rate in probing the internal structure of binary components. The discussed effects are generally applicable to stars across the entire Hertzsprung-Russell diagram, including the binary OB-stars discusse...

In this talk, we review some recent advances in the theory of dynamic tides in close binaries. We particularly focus on the effects of resonances of dynamic tides with free oscillation modes and on the role of dynamic tides in the comparison of theoretically predicted and observationally inferred apsidalmotion rates.
متن کاملThe effect of stellar compressibility and non-resonant dynamic tides on the apsidal-motion rate in close binaries
The paper is devoted to the analysis of the systematic deviations between the classical formula for the rate of secular apsidal motion in close binaries and the formula established within the framework of the theory of dynamic tides. The basic behaviour is found to be governed by the dependency of the forcing frequencies on the orbital period and the rotational angular velocity, irrespective of...
